Best of KC: Rooftop Hangouts
Newsflash—the weather’s about to take a turn. It’s fall. Those bright, sunny mornings are already starting to become cooler, crisp, and slightly darker. But it’s still not quite time for winter sweaters, boots, and scarves yet. Instead, let’s soak up every last bit of warm weather we have left—on the roof! Kansas City has some pretty glorious rooftop hangouts—here are seven of them.
Messenger Coffee and Ibis Bakery
Located at 16th and Grand in the Crossroads, Messenger Coffee and Ibis Bakery offer classic espresso drinks, manual brews, seasonal house-made specials, or a perfect drip coffee with a fresh bakery. Emphasizing local, farm-fresh ingredients means that their menu changes frequently. And up on the roof, there’s an outdoor fireplace—perfect for this changing weather!
Located in Power & Light with a pretty awesome happy hour, Drunken Fish offers mixed drinks, sake, wine, and beer, plus spring rolls, shrimp poppers, tuna poke tacos, and a wide range of sushi rolls. And their rooftop seating features a bar, heaters, and fireplaces.
Nestled in a corner of Westport, HopCat Kansas City’s craft beer headquarters. The beer list is extensive, from wheats, pale ales, ambers and browns to strong ales and barleywines and Belgians. And there’s food…so much food! Pizza, burgers, cosmic fries, sandwiches, and lots of appetizers.
Westport Ale House
Also in Westport, at the corner of Archibald and Broadway, Westport Ale House has a pretty sweet rooftop hangout, complete with a bar, full-service food menu, games like cornhole, giant Connect-4 and more, and big screen TV’s and music. And the food is pretty incredible, too—pretzel bites and stuffed tots, flavorful pizzas, all kinds of tacos, smoked wings, juicy burgers and more. This would be my choice for a rooftop hangout for sure!
Located on the west side of the Plaza, O’Dowd’s rooftop is pretty standard—a bar, lots of seating a dew TV’s, but with a superb view of the rest of the Plaza. Not to mention some pretty incredible food. They’ve got Irish pub fare, a classy brunch, and some gastro menu items—wings, flatbreads, and nachos. And a LOT of alcohol—mixed drinks, draft, bottles, and cans of beer, martinis, domestic bourbons and whiskeys, more Irish whiskeys than there are people in Ireland, scotches, Japanese malts, and wine. Everyone can find their drink of choice and have a pretty good time!
When you’re downtown and looking for some games to play, then Up-Down is for sure the place to go. With lots of vintage video games and skee-ball inside and some jumbo Connect-4 and Jenga on the roof, you can stay busy for hours. Lots of beer, lots of mixed drinks, but not a ton of food—though it does have pizza by the slice. Which is perfect because you can game in one hand with your slice in the other!
Chicken N Pickle
You don’t even have to like pickleball to hang out on the roof—although who doesn’t like pickleball? Located in North KC, Chicken N Pickle has lots of other yard games and a sports bar perfect for hanging out. And the food menu is pretty amazing, too. Per the name of the establishment, they serve wood-fired rotisserie chickens, sandwiches, salads because hey, we’re athletes, and lots of other munchies and sides. Even if you’re not in the mood to eat grab a locally crafted beer and enjoy the view!
