Best of KC: Best St. Patrick’s Day Hangouts
Well, the excitement of the Super Bowl has died down and it’s time to find something else to look forward to—some glimmer of hope at the end of this drab winter. The good news is that St. Patrick’s Day is right around the corner. It’s a big event in Kansas City. The Irish population here is strong. Immigrants from Ireland began coming to Westport and Independence in the mid-1800’s and with them they brought customs, music, dance, food, and everyone’s favorite: St. Patrick’s Day. And whether you’re looking for something family friendly, like a parade or a fun run, or something a little more “mature,” Kansas City has it all. But this year, let’s focus on the bar and pub scene. Here are some of the best places to hang out on St. Patrick’s Day.
Kelly’s Westport Inn
It’s simple, it’s traditional, and it’s a ton of fun! Good luck getting in on St. Patrick’s Day, but if you do, you’re sure to have a blast. Everyone will be there, especially since the KC parade ends there. If you haven’t been there for St. Paddy’s you haven’t really celebrated St. Paddy’s Day.
Brady’s Public House
Perhaps Brady’s absolute best feature is its traditional Irish menu: cottage pie, Irish sausage rolls, and corned beef. It’s a great place to watch Irish rugby while you sip some beer and don some green.
Browne’s Irish Marketplace
Since it opened in 1887 at 33rd and Pennsylvania, Browne’s has been one of the oldest establishments in North America. Not only does it sell Irish home goods, jewelry, and food, Browne’s also serves a traditional Irish breakfast in its deli, including Irish coffee, cider, beer, plus Reubens and coerned beef, traditional music, bagpipes, and Irish dancing.
Conroy’s Public House
With two locations, one in Westwood and one on 95th Street in Overland Park, Conroy’s has an authentic, upgraded menu. The OP location is more mellow and family-friendly, while the one in Midtown is a little more upscale and party-friendly. The choice is yours!
It’s in Power & Light, so you know it’s gonna be fun! Although it’s good for sporting events and Irish performers, with it’s great location, it’s a great place to post up on St. Patrick’s Day. Look for tons of Irish food and drink specials, plus a constant rotation of DJs to keep the party going.
If the weather is decent, the rooftop patio at O’Dowd’s is one of the best places to hang out on St. Patrick’s Day! The menu and the establishment has been revamped. Plus, there are dancers, live music, DJs, and Irish specials. Upscale and classic Irish fun!
Located at 151st and Nall in Leawood where it backs up to The Iron Horse Golf Course, this neighborhood pub boasts the “best selection of Irish whiskeys allowed in the state of Kansas,” in addition to a vast array of beers, wines, bourbons, and scotches. Plus, a uniquely Irish menu that has roots in County Tipperary.
O’Malley’s 1842 Pub
Just north of KC, in Weston, Missouri, O’Malley’s is considered historic and hosts life performances, festivals, and good live music. The fact that it was built inside of Weston Brewing Co.’s 176-year-old lagering cellar helps to set the mood—dim lighting, dark wood tables, and massive arched stone walls. It’s the perfect spot to camp out and experience the city’s St. Patrick’s Day festival and parade.
